Dr. Jules Cormier (00:46)

Thanks so much for having me, I'm pumped.

Bryan (00:49)

Awesome. I'm so excited. want to dig into some of those things I read in your intro there, but like take us back in time and help set the stage a little bit here. What inspired you to pursue this career in Madison and your personal health journey to get into this, you know, whole vegan world that we're in, and help set the stage.

Dr. Jules Cormier (01:07)

Right on. So I've been in practice in family medicine for 17 years. Never really was the typical case of grow. I want to grow up to be a doctor. My passions were biochemistry and physics and I had good grades. So family members recommended I go into medicine. I'm like, yeah, sure. So I kind of just ended up as a doctor.

always had a passion for nutrition and for health in general, fitness, playing sports. So a few years into my medical practice, I just got asked to teach a lifestyle medicine course at the university. So simple things like just what a healthy diet dietary pattern looked like, what exercises were good for certain chronic diseases. And that led me down a path of

just wanting to learn more about nutrition and health in general in lifestyle medicine. But the real aha moment happened when my first daughter was born. So the story goes, my daughter's 11 years old now. So when she was born, she was born with a milk protein allergy, quite severe eczema and asthma. And just so happens, I'm the one who probably gave her those genes, because I had the same conditions.

Bryan (02:27)

Mmm. Mmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (02:28)

So I've been battling asthma, eczema, or tachycardia, all allergic type conditions for my whole life, mostly during adulthood. And when Zero, my first daughter was born, suffering from all these conditions, we ended up seeing a dietitian, which, and she kind of connected the dots and said, did you ever consider just kind of cutting out beef and dairy products from your diet?

Now, back then, I was eating a healthy, omnivorous diet. Never even with a PhD in medicine, never really connected the dots that my diet and nutrition would be related to my chronic disease. So once that dietitian recommended that we cut out dairy so my wife could continue breastfeeding even with the milk protein allergy. Basically funny.

Bryan (03:01)

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (03:26)

I went on that same journey as my wife and my daughter. And surprisingly, my eczema went away. My urticaria got better. And that really fast forward six to 12 months. I start reading about evidence -based nutrition. And that's where I discover kind of a lot of the science is pointing towards obviously reducing junk food and processed food, but a plant predominant type dietary patterns.

Bryan (03:29)

Wow.

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (03:55)

So that's my first kind of time where I dive into that literature and being a medical practitioner and a teacher at our local medical school, I was quite fascinated with that. So fast forward another year, I'm basically on a whole food plant based diet for medical reasons. And if you on my website, I talk about it a lot more, but I was diagnosed with a rare condition called

Bryan (04:15)

Yeah.

Dr. Jules Cormier (04:25)

cholinergic angioedema. Some people call it exercise induced anaphylaxis. So a life threat life threatening condition where you your throat swells almost like it's very similar to a peanut allergy or to a shellfish allergy. I have an epipen the whole nine yards and I had four four attacks.

Bryan (04:33)

Okay.

Mm -hmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (04:50)

My last one was the worst one. It put me in a hospital with a, with an IV and an EpiPen and the whole thing. I thought I was dying. So that plus everything that was going on with my first daughter. she had highs, she had eczema. had all those things and kind of ends up that all these conditions are related to lifestyle and nutrition. So, when about within about

12 to 18 months after my last kind of attack where I was admitted in a hospital, I'm on a whole food plant -based diet. Never had a hive since then. Never had another attack. My eczema is gone. My asthma is pretty much gone. My daughter's as well, significantly improved. So, I mean, a lot more details than I can mash into a 30 second story, but basically...

that kind of the proof was in the pudding. I was now whole food plant -based, had reversed my own medical conditions. The literature really supported that these conditions would get better on a whole food plant -based nutrition. So that's where I decided to kind of become certified. I read the research, I did training specifically in lifestyle medicine.

Bryan (05:49)

Yeah.

Dr. Jules Cormier (06:10)

did a certification with Guelph University, just finished another certification with the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, got a scholarship offered to me to do that certification. And I'm just waiting for my vacation to be done with so I can basically start getting certified through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. So.

Bryan (06:18)

Mm -hmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (06:33)

I'm basically very motivated. Yeah, thank you. Motivated and passionate about spreading the word and awareness about the kind of the power of lifestyle medicine. Because I mean, I'm an athlete. I've been an athlete all my life and telling an athlete that every time you do exercise, you're at risk for anaphylaxis and dying and asthma and eczema and swelling of your throat and mouth. mean,

Bryan (06:36)

hehe

Yeah.

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (07:00)

It was quite devastating for me. So definitely between that and between the story with my oldest daughter, that was more than enough motivation to get me on that path.

Bryan (07:10)

And it's like, you know, I hate to see you have these conditions and have to go through such, such extreme things to have this thing. Like I, I just, what I watched forks over knives and I saw all the data and the science heading in that same direction. And I'm like, you know what? I'm just going to give this a try for 30, 60 days. And then I just started seeing the weight drop off, the cholesterol drop off, me getting more clarity of mind, all those things. like, you know, I just encourage everybody out there.

I mean, most people listening to this are already on the same path as we are, but like to encourage your friends and family, just give it a try for 30 or 60 days and you'll just see such a huge thing. I'm curious though, like how did you, how did you obviously have the medical experience and you're making money through the medical side of it, but like the business side of it, like how are you trying to pivot your practice now towards, you know, the plant based side and drawing people in. And I'm curious your thoughts on, on just,

Dr. Jules Cormier (07:47)

Absolutely.

Bryan (08:08)

You stumbled into doctorhood really at the family's request, but like you look back at your medical school, why didn't they give you more nutrition experience and training? that is the diet and exercise is the two things that keep you out of the hospital. Right. mean, I'm just curious if you can help us unpack that.

Dr. Jules Cormier (08:12)

Yeah.

I Yeah, absolutely. So firstly, I barely any if minimal, if any, and training in nutrition and lifestyle medicine. I think we all know that eating healthy is good for us and exercising is good for us, but we don't get into any specifics right on certain dietary zooming out on dietary patterns, but zooming in on specific foods that can help with specific diseases.

So we kind of learned that on my own just because of personal interest. And it was about, my God, only maybe three or four years ago when trying to maybe give some information on social media even came into mind. It's my wife that said, Jules, you went from not being able to run a 5K without puffers.

to running a sub two hour half marathon without any puffers at all. You went from struggling with exercising because of urticaria and eczema and allergies and asthma. And this year we just, me and my wife, props to her as well. She's plant based as well. We both qualify for the world Ninja championships in Disneyland, California. So we just competed there last week.

Bryan (09:28)

Mm

Wow, that's awesome.

Dr. Jules Cormier (09:49)

Without a hive, I didn't even bring my EpiPen with me. Not really something I would recommend to my patients, but that's the confidence that I have that my symptoms are in remission, right, for over a decade now. So my wife said, Jules, you have to tell your story. I think your story might inspire some people. So I started by basically creating an Instagram account, a Facebook page, which started with 40 followers. Now it's probably close to six or seven thousand.

Bryan (09:58)

Yeah. Yeah.

Mm -hmm.

Mm

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (10:19)

And that's where I was like, and people are asking, firstly, one of my friends said, instead of telling people what to do, show them how, right? So show them what's possible on a plant predominant diet, because athletes will look at your accomplishments and say, plants do have protein, and medical students will look at your medical history.

Bryan (10:30)

Mm -hmm.

Mm -hmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (10:46)

And see, wow, he reversed asthma and eczema and put urticaria and angioedema into remission with food. So my goal was just to simply share my story in hopes of inspiring others. And that kind of led to very organically, people asking questions. My first year with my website, I created a website, I created a blog, I posted weekly blog, post articles for, I think I posted 60 straight weeks.

That's when I created then my my YouTube channel. That's when I wanted to create my own podcast. And now people are asking, can you can you coach me? Can you basically I want one on one time with you? So I got certified in as a naturopath. So now I can coach people on the side. Now, lifestyle medicine absolutely bleeds into my daily practice as a doctor. I talk about that with my patients.

Bryan (11:23)

That's right.

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (11:46)

Instead of just going straight to the cholesterol pill, I kind of talk about lifestyle first. The same thing for other modifiable risk factors. But the business just simply started as giving live events locally at my small town. mean, a small town on the east coast of Canada, French small town with a few thousand people. And last year, I think we sold out something like six or seven live events.

Bryan (11:49)

Yeah.

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (12:12)

where 150 people are buying tickets to hear me talk about plant -based nutrition, which is mind boggling to me in a small fishing village where people hunt and fish still, right? So I think the interest is there and that kind of organically bloomed into this coaching kind of endeavor I've started about a year ago. So that's how I kind of pivoted towards kind of the business side of promoting.

Bryan (12:12)

Wow.

Right.

Dr. Jules Cormier (12:41)

plant -based nutrition in lifestyle medicine.

Bryan (12:41)

So yeah, mean, so many little tips and tricks, but I mean, the bottom line that I heard is just start. I mean, like just go out there and put it out there. I can you imagine if, you know, I know us, us plant -based or vegans or whatever we want to call ourselves in this group that we're in, if we all just went out and created a blog and a website and just started talking about this, how much impact we could have on the planet. So kudos to you for putting it out there. But like, there's one thing I was reading

Dr. Jules Cormier (13:06)

Absolutely.

Bryan (13:10)

I think on your website or something, want you to unpack for us a little bit too, because it's not just, it's the consumer side of this business, like helping more people, you know, figure out the right path. And, but it's also like the challenges that you saw, but from going through medical school, like you're teaching other doctors now, right? Can you expand on that a little bit?

Dr. Jules Cormier (13:28)

Yep. Absolutely. So, happy to say that there's actually a lot of openness. I thought I was going to meet a lot of barriers when I started discussing kind of lifestyle medicine and plant based nutrition. Now, just to be clear, when I started on a plant based diet, I started for health reasons.

Bryan (13:53)

Mm -hmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (13:54)

But then as you kind of learn more, you're like, I'm reducing my carbon footprint. I'm reducing animal cruelty. I'm connecting very on an emotional basis with what I'm doing. And I can absolutely identify as a vegan now. absolutely that. I'm trying to stay in my lane as a health professional because talking about ethics is sometimes met with a lot of controversy from people who are not ready to hear about it.

Bryan (13:56)

my gosh, huh.

For sure.

Dr. Jules Cormier (14:24)

But I mean, the most important thing is that I brought that to kind of my vision of maybe creating a lifestyle medicine program at our medical school and to the 16 doctors that work with me. And it was met with a lot of optimism that that's where we should be going. That's where the medical field should be going. Talking about nutrition, talking about dietary patterns as a whole in terms of planetary health and

animal cruelty and also for prevention of chronic diseases. So I think if we adopt a non pushy way of kind of just transitioning towards more plants for health reasons, carbon footprint and animal cruelty without really labeling it as vegan, I think that that kind of minimizes it, the friction it could cause in people's lives. I personally took about

Bryan (14:58)

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (15:23)

almost 12 to 18 months to transition fully. I mean, I had small amounts of dairy and maybe small amounts of cheese and my diet at the end. But once I did like you did watch documentaries, I personally watched Dominion front of that. That that shifts your perspective in one night. All of a sudden, I was like, yeah, no, it can't be 99 percent for me personally. It has to be 100.

Bryan (15:26)

Mm

Mm

Mm -hmm.

Yeah, that one will do it.

Yeah.

Dr. Jules Cormier (15:52)

so I try to be careful when trying to be extremist with my patients or with my colleagues, because at the end of the day, I am a doctor. I want to promote more plans on people's plates. So my whole platform is geared towards giving tips and tricks of people so that they can increase slowly and adopt behaviors that create little friction with their lives. Right.

Bryan (16:05)

Mm -hmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (16:18)

But I mean, obviously people that come to see me are people that are highly motivated and prioritize their health. So very often they're kind of moving a lot faster than the typical person.

Bryan (16:30)

I want to have you back on our other podcast that have a whole doctor episode and unpack a lot of those questions and even more detail But I'm curious if you can try and summarize what you see In your practice on a day -to basis some of the common misconceptions about the plant -based diet I mean obviously we get hit with where do you get your protein from on a regular basis, but

Dr. Jules Cormier (16:50)

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's funny because I get this question. Now, people I live in, I live in a very small community. Our biggest town in my province has about 10000 people. Now that I've been online for many years, people kind of know me around here and I get the same questions repeatedly, which is why, which is why I decided to create that blog and that website where I just kind of steer people towards.

Bryan (16:57)

Mm

Mm -hmm.

Yeah.

Dr. Jules Cormier (17:18)

protein. You have a question about protein. I wrote about two articles on where do you get your protein and is protein something to worry about? And then I dedicated about an hour of two podcast episodes to that very subject. But the typical questions are, where do you get your protein? And I can answer that simply by saying you get your protein from plants. If you eat plant sources of protein in a very balanced way.

Bryan (17:27)

Great.

Everything.

Dr. Jules Cormier (17:46)

I mean, if you want, I'm an athlete. So that's for sure. I'm aiming for higher amounts of protein that the typical person would need. but I'm not, I'm not, it's not.

Bryan (17:53)

Mm -hmm.

But I saw something from Dr. Bernard the other day. It's like, you know, we're all on this processed food cake and we take the corn and we don't want to turn it into high fructose corn syrup and eat the corn chips because it's all processed food. But think about it. The chicken's going to eat the corn and the chicken is basically a processed food at that point. So anyway, I thought that was a neat little summary to it. But yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt.

Dr. Jules Cormier (18:04)

-huh.

Yep. Yep. Absolutely. Absolutely.

Absolutely. mean, no, no, it's a super awesome point. And I mean, the misconceptions that people base their fears of plant based diets on of people eating soy and developing gynecomastia or enlarged breasts of men not able dropping their testosterone on plant based diets on people.

Bryan (18:40)

Mm -hmm. That's an opposite problem.

Dr. Jules Cormier (18:44)

It's it's the it's the opposite problem. It's the opposite that happens on plant -based diets and and The fun part now is actually based with high -level quality scientific evidence, right? We have research that we can cite and steer people towards these these studies that kind of confirm that plant predominant diets or plant exclusive diets are safe for everyone at any age of any sex even pregnant or lactating and even

Bryan (18:47)

Yes.

Dr. Jules Cormier (19:13)

can promote athletic performance. I mean, it's trying to convince people now, but the people that really don't want to believe it, I don't think you can show them any science that'll change their minds. People that are open -minded and really want to get to the scientific bottom of things, there's a whole bunch of high quality science that confirms that plant -based diets are great for health, great for prevention and remission of chronic disease, for longevity.

Bryan (19:25)

Mm

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (19:41)

and that are super adequate for anyone, even athletes, right?

Bryan (19:44)

Yeah. 100%. Yeah. Well said. So I will put some show notes in there to those links on, the protein talks and a few things like that, that we mentioned. If we bring it back to the business side a little bit, like I feel, I feel like part of my job is kind of the opposite. Like the business coaching side of this is to help point out that everybody has their ups and downs in businesses. Right? So what have been some of your entrepreneurial challenges as you've been building your platform, your brand, your company?

Dr. Jules Cormier (19:52)

Perfect.

Well, the first thing is remembering that I operate a very busy medical practice. So I mean, I'm working 50 to 60 hours per week doing family medicine, lifestyle medicine, and doing skin surgery half of my time. I still teach. We've competed at the World Ninja Championships over the last three years. that's, I mean, 15 hours or more of training per week. I have two young daughters.

So just the logistics of finding time to dedicate to my business is difficult, but I've managed to do it during the nights. And for now, my business is basically online coaching. So the ups and downs are simply for me is the time crunch of finding ways to fit it into my schedule. Now, when a patient comes to see me at the office and has questions about lifestyle medicine or

Bryan (20:45)

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (21:14)

nutrition in general. I mean, it takes an hour to do a history, a nutritional assessment, see what their goals are, and see how you can support them through change. That's very difficult in the, I mean, our in our health system, my patients wait two to three months before they can get an appointment with me. So if I decide to dedicate an hour to all my patients, my waitlist is going to be a year long, right? So

Bryan (21:36)

Mm -hmm.

Mm -hmm.

Dr. Jules Cormier (21:43)

just kind of being able to adopt that type of practice in the kind of reality that we're living in with where there's a lot more people that are sick than there are doctors to take care of them. It's tough to find time to prevent fires when you're just too busy putting them out, right? So all of my coaching is done on the side on weekends that takes a toll on your personal life and any personal social life I have left.

Bryan (21:56)

Mm -hmm.

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (22:13)

Not much, but I love doing this. I mean, I've coached over a hundred people over the last six months, have gotten people off their meds, people are reversing diseases. I mean, the outcomes and the testimonials are amazing, but for me it's just finding time. So a lot of my courses that I'm giving are either done live, but people have access to the recordings.

Bryan (22:27)

Mm -hmm

Dr. Jules Cormier (22:39)

So, and when I do live events where I'm presenting and doing public speaking, it's all online and recorded, right? So that's kind of managed some of the barriers that I've had in terms of just finding the time. Because no one wants to listen to me talk on a Saturday morning at 8 a but sometimes that's the only space I have in my schedule where I can give a talk, right? So it's been challenging.

Bryan (22:53)

Absolutely.

Mm -hmm.

Yep. That's right.

And, and I find the other little tip is I just do office hours, you know, like anybody can come in for that hour and ask me any questions you want. And if they don't show up, I at least get a little bit of work done. So get caught up on stuff, but I'm curious on the, business skills for doctors. I mean, you went to school for a long time to get to earn that, that PhD and all these certifications that you have. What are some of the essential skills that doctors and other medical professionals?

Dr. Jules Cormier (23:16)

Yep, absolutely.

Bryan (23:34)

need to have to venture into this entrepreneurship journey.

Dr. Jules Cormier (23:38)

Well, that's a good question. think for me, what I've done is that just so happens that I'm in contact with friends that are kind of more influencers than I am online. And it's as simple as sent an email, give them a call. Can you give me an hour of kind of just how to brand, how to reach more people with your message? I mean, when I started my website, I had four different fonts and 10 different colors on my page.

I spoke with someone who's really a brand expert. She said, Jules, you need to have a steady, consistent font all throughout. You need to have brand colors. You need to have a logo. So just kind of finding experts. I realized very quickly that I thought I knew what I was doing. But just in terms of branding, found a photographer, a videographer, found a brand expert that could kind of create a

Well, an easily recognizable brand in brand coloring where my logos could be shared and people can recognize me, painted my office, put some colors there that would kind of, that would solidify my brand. And I spoke with a lot of influencers that I knew when I'm in contact online, just to see if they've seen my content and if they'd had any suggestions or recommendations on how to help me build a consistent brand that people will recognize quickly.

Bryan (24:43)

Mm -hmm.

Mm -hmm.

I love it. Well done because it's very, it's very well polished and you definitely surrounded yourself with the right experts there. So what do you, what do you see as the future with Dr. Jules and the plant -based podcasts and all the stuff you have going on? You've got a lot of balls up in the air, just like I do. So lay out your plan for the future.

Dr. Jules Cormier (25:10)

Ha ha.

awesome. Thanks.

Absolutely. Absolutely. So my plan is to continue doing my podcast because I think that that reaches a lot more people that my blog did. mean, people are not or less. My experience is that people are less interested in spending 20 minutes reading an article than 20 minutes just listening to me wing it on a subject. So I think I want to keep on doing my podcast.

Next year, I focus on interviewing kind of change makers in this space. So hopefully interviewing people. And my next goal is to build like automated courses. So right now what I'm doing is that I'm doing one on one coaching or group online coaching where I'm taking trying to take people from zero to hero or making them progress along that health spectrum or that plant based nutrition spectrum. But I do recognize that

automating courses where I do not have to be present spending. I mean, my last course, I probably spent 15 hours in one month just teaching online to a handful of people where this information is going to be repeated to the next group and repeated to the next group, or I think I can really take like online courses and automate them so that they do have access to me. But the

Bryan (26:35)

Mm

Dr. Jules Cormier (26:51)

the information on what dose of B12 you have to take or grams of protein, I think that can be automated and kind of would free up a lot of time so it can keep on growing, right?

Bryan (27:03)

Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree, right? Like electricity 100 years ago changed our lives in many, many ways. I think AI and the internet and all these things are gonna, you're gonna see another revolution for the next hundred years. So that's just my technology nerd talking on that side of it. This has been.

Dr. Jules Cormier (27:16)

I agree. I agree.

No, but I agree with that. Yeah, I think it's the way to go.

Bryan (27:24)

Yeah, this has been so insightful. I've really learned a lot just hanging out with you. How can we as a community help you Dr. Jules and what are the best ways to get in touch?

Dr. Jules Cormier (27:37)

Perfect, so to get in touch, my main page where I have most of my followers, my content is simply the Dr. Jules Cormier Facebook page. I'm also on Instagram. I have a YouTube channel where I share videos basically about all types of subjects. The Plant -Based Dr. Jules or the Dr. Jules Plant -Based Podcast.

is something I created this year. So that's on all platforms where you can, you can listen to podcasts. I upload weekly episodes. That's where most of the people, I think, find the information and my website, plantbaseddoctorjules .com. That's usually where I receive a lot of messages and inquiries about coaching. My coaching packages are there. So people who are kind of curious about more information, they can check out my blog there and links to all my social media platforms are on my website.

I love it. Thank you. Thank you so much. It has been very enlightening and there's a lot of ways you can get in touch with Dr. Jules. So check those out. We'll make sure they're in the show notes for you, but we appreciate you being on the show, sharing some insight and tips and tricks with our business community here. And that is all the time we have for this episode of Plant Based on Fire. Thank you again, Dr. Jules.

Dr. Jules Cormier (28:55)

My pleasure. Thanks for inviting me.

Bryan (28:57)

Until next time everybody, keep that fire burning. We'll talk soon.
